Relationships are wonderful gifts given to us by God. As we read in the Bible, the most intimate relationship is marriage between a husband and a wife. Unfortunately, relationships today are under more cultural and interpersonal pressure and stress than ever before in our history. Marriage is under assault from every quarter, whether it is pressure on young people to abandon it and just live together, or through break-up, or the current debate on the core fundamental nature of what constitutes marriage.

It is with great joy that I recommend to you a film I found recently on DVD called Fireproof. It has already touched the hearts of millions of people in America where it went on general release in cinema’s, although, here at home, it has only been released on DVD, probably because it is uncompromisingly a Christian production.

This movie has a very clear Christian message, but is presented in a way that is neither preachy or off-putting to those who are not Christians. It is wonderfully true to life and hard-hitting. It confronts the reality of how a marriage can disintegrate, yet it does so with humour as well as pathos. Set in the context of an action packed drama of a bunch of guys in a local fire station, we follow the adventures of the captain who risked his life rescuing others, while failing to see that his own marriage is in need of rescue. At work, inside burning buildings, Capt. Caleb Holt lives by the firefighter’s code: ‘Never leave your partner behind’. However at home, in the cooling embers of his marriage, he lives by his own rules. His wife, Catherine, grew up, always dreaming of marrying a loving, brave firefighter. . . just like her dad. Now, after seven years of marriage, Catherine wonders when she stopped being “good enough” for her husband. Regular arguments over jobs, finances, housework, and outside interests have readied them both to move on to something with more spark. As the couple prepares to divorce, Caleb’s father challenges his son to commit to a 40-day experiment: “The Love Dare.”

Fireproof is a journey that proves real love is never lost, it’s just hidden by the difficulties that engulf marriages today. With the prayers of others, some faith, hope and a little honest application it can be found and rescued even from the fiercest fire.

I am not going to tell you any more of the plot as it would simply spoil the impact of this wonderfully moving film. If you have not seen it, then please get a copy and watch it, but don’t stop there. Buy a copy and lend it to a friend or better still get together with friends to watch and discuss it. This film is designed for that purpose and can also be purchased with a church pack and used as a form of outreach.

I love to watch good movies and believe me this is one of the best. You can get it at all the usual outlets. Fireproof DVD is published by Integrity. The ISBN for Fireproof DVD is 602341003391.
