More Than Gold

The Olympic Games in London 2012 are now just weeks away and their impact will be felt not only in the capital but across the world. The games will also create a buzz of enthusiasm and excitement locally with home grown talent such as Wendy Houvenaghel chasing gold in the indoor cycle track. With the Olympic Torch also arriving in Northern Ireland in June, for four days, there are plenty of opportunities for all of us to use the Olympics as a powerful resource for evangelism.

More Than Gold is an organisation committed to helping churches engage with the games. Your church could show events on a big screen, run a festival, fun day, summer camp, sports day, soccer competition or assist the local council as the Olympic Torch passes through your community; the list is vast and wideranging.

All we ask you to do is:

Planning meetings with churches have already taken place in Portrush, Portstewart, Newry, Bangor and Belfast. There has been much encouragement and enthusiasm for the programme. If your church has not yet been represented at meetings and is keen to get ready for the games – it is not too late.

Planning for any Olympic outreach is essential. The good news is that the ‘More Than Gold’ team are here to help. By registering your church at www. morethangold.org.uk we can direct you towards a host of resources including training. On a local level, please feel free to contact me directly at the Crown Jesus office (028) 9073 8338 and we will be only too happy to help you get ready for the games.

Leonard Ravenhill once said, “The opportunity of a lifetime must be taken in the lifetime of the opportunity.”

At More Than Gold, we aim to do all we can to help you engage with the games. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, not only to witness the games in the UK and the Olympic Torch travel through Northern Ireland, but to use the resources and training available to reach others. However, there is one essential ingredient to More Than Gold being a success. We need people to have a bit of get-up-andgo, a willingness to move into action. We need people like you to come out of the starting blocks and move! Jesus didn’t leave us with a list of ideas to think about but a call to action:

‘Go into the entire world and proclaim the good news to everyone’ Mark 16:15 Onwards!
