REJOICE RECIPE

DAILY BREAD

We tantalise our taste buds with delectable dinners and tasty treats, but when the plates are empty, we pile up a problem. The dishes! Have you ever left the dishes in the sink? Lunch dishes, dinner dishes, teacups, before you know it the sink is overflowing with dirty dishes. You avoid the dishes. They don’t move from the sink, but you put them into the back of your mind and forget about them. But, when tea time comes and there aren’t enough plates or cups, you realise how much you need the dishes. The dishes have been ignored and avoided until they are needed.

Some of us treat God like dirty dishes. We avoid Him until we need Him. God hasn’t moved, but we put Him into the back of our mind and forget about Him. Just like avoiding the kitchen, we avoid God so we don’t feel guilty. But, when something difficult happens in our life, we realise how much we need God. Our marriage falls apart, our finances plummet, our children turn away from God, our job is taken away, our health fails. We ignore God until we realise how much we need Him.

Our bodies need nourishment every day, about three times a day. Our physical need for food throughout the day can remind us of our daily need for God. Jesus says “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”(John 6:35) Don’t wait to take communion at church on Easter Sunday, taste the bread of life by spending time with God today. Why not try spending time with God three times a day, ten minutes each time? The next time your stomach growls, remember the satisfying spiritual food that only Jesus can supply.

HOMEMADE BREAD


INGREDIENTS:

2 tablespoons dried active baking yeast

625 ml whole milk, warmed

185g honey

2 teaspoons salt

440g plain flour

750g whole meal flour

125g unsalted butter, at room temperature

Makes 2 loaves

METHOD:

Step 1 – In a bowl, sprinkle the yeast over the milk, allowing to bloom for a few minutes, then whisk until smooth. Whisk in the honey and salt, let stand for 4-5 minutes, then whisk again. In a separate bowl, combine the two flours. Reserve a handful of flour (about 155g) for the kneading step. Using a wooden spoon, stir the flour into the milk mixture. Add the butter and mix well.

Step 2 – Knead on a lightly floured surface (using the reserved flour). Knead the dough for about 5 minutes. Shape the dough into a ball, return it to the bowl, and cover with plastic wrap.

Step 3 – Place the bowl in a warm spot to rise until doubled (about 2-2 ó hours). The dough is ready when a slight indent remains after pressing the dough.

Step 4 – Preheat the oven to 190ÆC. Butter two 8×4 inch loaf pans. Punch down the dough in the bowl, cut it in half, and then shape each half into a rectangle the length of the loaf pan. Cover the pans loosely with plastic wrap. Allow the dough to rise in a warm spot for 45 minutes.

Step 5 – Bake until the tops are golden and the loaves sound hollow when tapped, 35-40 minutes. Allow to cool for a few minutes before slicing and enjoying!

Everyone should bake a loaf of bread at least once in their life to experience the smell of freshly baked bread coming out the oven and to taste the homemade, soft bread melting in their mouth.
